Empower Your Child with Sensei Candy Karate

Kids Martial Arts

"The art of fighting without fighting."

Empower Your Child with Sensei Candy Karate
At Sensei Candy Karate, we believe martial arts should be empowering, safe, and deeply rooted in discipline, respect, and character. We often get questions about our Junior Black Belt program, especially when it comes to younger children in our Lil’ Dragons program.

Here’s the truth: Black Belts should be earned—through hard work, consistent effort, and a commitment to growth. But we also understand that children develop at different rates, and sometimes, the traditional path to a full Black Belt isn’t the right fit just yet.

That’s where Junior Black Belts come in.

What is a Junior Black Belt?
A Junior Black Belt is designed for young children—typically age 10 or younger—who have trained with dedication and demonstrated strong knowledge of the core curriculum, but may not be ready to complete the full requirements of an adult Black Belt test.

This includes some of our special abilities kiddos—children who may process information differently but still work incredibly hard to master their skills and techniques. They are also classified as Lil’ Dragons.

How It Works:
1. Curriculum Requirements

  To earn a brown belt, Lil’ Dragons must know the following katas with verbal guidance:

  * Chungi
  * Tangoon
  * Toesan

  For second brown, they must demonstrate those forms without assistance.

  To progress:
  * Won Yo is required for the red belt
  * Chugmu is required to earn the Junior Black Belt

2. Modified Expectations
  Junior Black Belts are not required to learn:

  * Every self-defense move
  * Pressure points or advanced applications
  * In-depth martial arts history
  * Specialty material required for a full Black Belt

  (In fact, the Junior Black Belt test is equivalent to our blue/red belt test for older students.)

3. Distinctive Belts
  Junior Black Belts wear a black belt with a white stripe, clearly indicating their Junior status.

4. No Extra-Curricular Credits Required
  Unlike full Black Belt candidates, Junior candidates are not required to have:

  * Sparring credits
  * Tournament experience
  * Teaching credits

  (Note: These are still required for regular tests, regardless of age.)

5. Path to a Full Black Belt
  If a Junior Black Belt later decides to pursue a regular full Black Belt, they are welcome to retest. If they meet all the requirements—regardless of age—they can earn their solid Black Belt.

6. Once a Black Belt, Always a Black Belt
  We honor every student who passes a Junior Black Belt test with the same respect as any other Black Belt. However, most students who earn their Junior Black Belt choose to retest as they grow older so they can earn their 1st Degree Black Belt and continue advancing.

  The timeline for further degrees:
  * 2 years to test for 2nd Degree
  * 3 years to test for 3rd Degree
  * And so on

Why Offer Junior Black Belts?
Some believe kids shouldn’t earn Black Belts at all—but at Sensei Candy Karate, we disagree when the title is earned with integrity.

Our students—no matter their age—are held to high standards. Most take 3–4 years to reach Black Belt level. They also must:

* Complete community service hours
* Earn teaching credits
* Submit a resume

Maintain an outstanding record in and out of the dojo.

Age doesn’t determine rank—character and competence do.

And in our experience, the youngest students—those who stick with it year after year—often become the strongest, most dedicated Black Belts. Many never need the Junior route at all, because they stay committed and learn the full material at their own pace, even when modified to suit their age.

Final Thoughts
If your child is passionate about martial arts but isn’t ready to master the full curriculum, that’s okay. The Junior Black Belt offers recognition for their effort and skill without rushing the process.

At Sensei Candy Karate, we believe every child has the potential to be great—with the right instruction, guidance, and heart.
